What you will learn

The ELT Masterclass on Drilling Techniques in the EFL Classroom focuses on practical strategies and methods that can help improve students’ pronunciation, fluency, and confidence in English. The workshop covers the importance of drilling, strategies for effective drilling, challenges that students and teachers may face, and a range of techniques to make drilling engaging and effective.

The importance of drilling in language learning cannot be overstated. Pronunciation plays a crucial role in communication, and drilling helps students build their confidence, improve their accuracy, and develop fluency in English. It is vital that teachers create a supportive and engaging environment to encourage students to practice pronunciation and reduce any embarrassment or anxiety they may feel.

To make drilling more effective, teachers should consider factors such as the level of their students, the focus of the exercise, and the desired outcome. For lower-level students, the focus should be on building confidence, practicing simple word stress patterns, and working on tricky sounds. Higher-level students, on the other hand, will benefit from working on chunks and phrases, contractions, linking sounds, and the natural rhythm of speech. It is essential to strike a balance between accuracy and fluency to ensure students feel comfortable and confident in their language abilities.
